Valentine's

It's Valentine's Day again. Long ago, Leonard told me something related to this subject, but now that I'm in medical school, I thought perhaps I'd look into the matter myself. I went through my textbooks, my guides, my atlases, and my high-yield notes, and it seems that he was right: there ain't no cure for love.

I walked into this empty church; I had no place else to go
When the sweetest voice I ever heard, whispered to my soul
I don't need to be forgiven for loving you so much
It's written in the scriptures, it's written there in blood
I even heard the angels declare it from above
There ain't no cure,
There ain't no cure,
There ain't no cure for love

Chocolate is a pretty good remedy.

I'll have to look chocolate up in 'Clinical Evidence'.

Random question, but it just hit me...you're a med student! What does a person have when their eye lashes fall out, followed by a patch of hair on their head? A neighbor of mine is experiencing that, and no doctor she has seen seems to be too worried. But in my opinoin that can't be a good thing.

I'll look it up, although it probably is nothing to worry about. All her lashes fell out? How much later did the hair fall out? How big is the patch, i.e. what is the diameter in inches?

Yeah, all the lashes fell out. At first it was just a chunk, then the rest followed. Shortly later she noticed the bald spot in the back near the base of her hair. It's probably 1.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches long. I don't think healthiness is large bald spots. But then again, I'm no doctor! :oD

It is one of two things. I'm gonna look up some details tonight, then I'll post back.

Does she have little pits on her nails? Any other things she complains about, like a rash on her cheeks, or sore joints?

She doesn't have pits that I've seen. Nor has she been complaining of sore joints. There is no rash anywhere. One thing that she has said though is that her pants have been looser than usual lately. So maybe weight loss is a side effect of whatever? I don't know. Thanks for looking it up! :O) It'll give you more practice. :op

It's something called 'alopecia areata'. Basically, you suddenly lose eyelashes, eyebrows, head hair, etc, in patches, without scarring. It's pretty common; about 1% of the US population will have an episode before age 50.

'Wait and see' is basically the treatment. A friend of mine in Toronto actually had this as well. His patch regrew within a year; he had it happen again, maybe four years later. About 1/5 of people who get this, have a family history of it...

Here's the emedicine page, and the quick summary is "spontaneous regrowth occurs in most patients within a few months, with or without treatment". So, that's why her doc wasn't too worried.

Ohh good. It's nothing to worry about! :o) Thanks for checking it out doc! Hehe.

Glad to have been of service. :)

Looking stuff up can be quite entertaining for me; usually, it's some obscure condition, that I've diagnosed in myself, or that some prof has told me I'm a "poster-child" for... (due to height and skinniness).

It won't work in reality, that's exactly what I consider.
