I went tie shopping over the weekend. I basically had four ties in total, and after one week of clerkship, it was pretty clear that I needed to expand that number to add some variability to my wardrobe.
First, I hit all the 'best' stores in town, and boy, was I disappointed. This town is full of ties meant to be loud and make you stand out in an oil-business crowd. To top it off, the salespeople all looked at me with suspicion; I suppose that I look more like a shoplifter than a med student. Anyways, I then backtracked to the cheaper places like The Bay, and found a couple of ties that did the trick.
That's a lot of effort for an outgoing fashion. Ties are losing popularity in healthcare these days, as they tend to help spread infections. However, they haven't been banned outright here yet, and the patients and preceptors still expect you to wear them, to meet society's standards of professional dress. Oh well, it just means more money for the dry cleaners.
In unrelated news, I have managed to acclimatize my body to getting to work by 6:15. Unfortunately, I've overdone it a bit, and now I'm waking up on my own before 4...

There was a period in my life where I got up at 4:45 every morning to go to the gym before work. I also fell asleep at my desk just about every day (good thing I had 3 huge computer screens to hide behind). Of course what I was doing was a lot less interesting than surgery.
being at work by 6.15 omgomgomgomg!!! that will kill me... we have to do 2 x 6 wks in surgery (one block in general and one in a specialty of our choice) during clerkship. how about you? how does it work at your school?
Wow, now that's dedication to exercise. I don't think I've ever been willing to get up before 5:30 for anything in my life. Maybe that's why they make you stand in surgery... so it's harder to sleep.
Marysienka, don't you go to choir early at 5 or so, once in a while? That's 3 a.m. here, so that's really early. :)
We just have four weeks in general, two weeks in another specialty (either ortho or plastics), and one week in a third (thoracics, vascular, or neuro). If you want more surgery time, you have to take it from our already meagre ten weeks of elective.
The more I come up against the compromises of the three-year system, the more frustrated with it I become... :(
Ooow and I was whinning 'cause they cut on the optional blocks here... We only have 4 in 2 years, the rest is obligatory.

hello tall! have just been catching up with your posts and am a little confused as to what exactly clerkship is... tho it must be some sort of punishment if you have to be in hospital for 6.15am! and spend all day in surgery. i hate general surgery. everything is far too squishy.
I love squishy.
Still, I'm not sure what I'll end up doing, either... I'm not sure I'm cut out to be a surgeon.
Clerkship is just... clinical placements? I'm not sure what the rest of the world calls it.
I think every person should glance at this.
