Lack of Intellectual Growth

Skinny Talls goes on elective last summer. Picture an OR, with a surgeon performing a laproscopic cholecystectomy; he uses his instruments to indicate the gall bladder:

Surgeon: "What am I holding?"
Skinny Talls: "A CAMERA!!!"
Surgeon: "Uhh... okay...? (Thinks to self: OMG, how dumb is this guy?)"

Today, Skinny Talls, on elective, assists in a VATS procedure. A full year of medical education has passed:

Surgeon: "What are *you* holding?"
Skinny Talls: "A CAMERA!!!"
Surgeon: "Uhh... okay...?"

Thanks for the story. It makes me feel better about my lack of progress in understanding respiratory anatomy.

Yesterday, I couldn't name all the layers of the esophagus. Pretty embarrassing, considering how easy it is. Oh well, it gives me another learning issue for the weekend. :)

This is funny. What I particularly love about retraction, suction, laparoscopic camera operation is that it looks so easy ... until you try it and suck at it. First you feel indignant from not being allowed to touch the suction, then you feel incompetent from being incapable of keeping the field clear without holding up the operation. Ah, third year - good times. Probably ought to just post this as an entry my own site, rather than leave the longest comment in the history of blogs. Anyway, nice blog.

Thanks. My plan for the week is to get inside the camera's mind, to think like it thinks, to feel what it feels.
